Energy complaints reach mid-month high

Chief Ombudsman Lewis Shand Smith says: "While it's disappointing to learn that customers remain so heavily dissatisfied with the Big Six energy suppliers, it's encouraging to see that some of the smaller companies are gaining favour among consumers. With this in mind it's unsurprising that more customers than ever are voting with their feet and switching supplier for a better deal.

"As the sole ombudsman for the energy sector, we have witnessed the number of complaints we handle increase almost every month, with a record number of 52,308 energy complaints solved last year. To date, we've handled 3,602 complaints so far this month, which stands at 85 more for the entire month of January 2014 and we're only halfway through. Consumers are becoming more aware of their rights and more willing to act if they feel hard done by. It's important for customers to know they can turn to us for free and impartial advice if a complaint with a supplier remains unresolved for eight weeks or more."
